The story of Scrambled Eggs & Toast

Scrambled Eggs and Toast is a charming observational comedy inspired by a trip to the restaurant at our local supermarket. The man in front of us ordered an all day breakfast but please “No Hash browns” he didn't’ like them. He paid his money to a young cashier with a very blank expression, happy his simply request had been accepted and off he went to find a seat and place his order number in its slot.

jIf you are not familiar with the English Supermarket Restaurant system, when you place an order they give jyou a small red square of card with a number on it (usually laminated) for you to place in a stand on your table, so when they bring out your meal they can find you.

Well, after the man, we ordered, the people behind us ordered and the people behind them ordered. We all sat down, placed our numbers in their little stands and one by one our orders came… but not the hash brown man’s.

Now some of the meals that had been brought out definitely required a longer cooking time than an All Day Breakfast. How long does it take to crack an egg, fry a rash of bacon, butter some toast? Yet still he sat there, his lone number in the stand.

My mother was with me at the time and she has a wicked sense of humor. It was her who noticed the poor man’s plight and it was her, who started and inspired the stories we began to make up about what was happening in the kitchen. Why it should be so hard to omit two little hash browns from a plate. “I should write a sketch about this” I said and I did. If you haven’t watched Scrambled Eggs on Toast yet, please do and know that poor man really sat there. Why? We can only speculate.
