Director’s Statement

As a film maker I could say I think of myself as a story teller who sees the world through a lens shaped by my own personal experiences but having never come face to face with a real ghost or lived in a haunted house (thank god) this time I’m having to draw on somebody else’s experiences for my story to tell.

The Haunting of House 49 is based a on a true life haunting that happened in England in the late 70s, a chilling tale of a woman haunted by a solitary ghost. This story, just like the ones I used to hear sitting around campfires when I was young, truly scared me, I believed it. Hell I had too it was real! That was the thing that truly attracted me to this story. (Apart from the amazing jobLennah Seelig did with writing the script)

It was a good old fashioned ghost story, "An old haunted house movie" and I’ve alwayswanted to make one. As Lennah puts it “We love to be scared! Every generation is fascinated by the anomalies between life and death. As theconstant popularity of shows like Most Haunted, ghost hunters and internet blogs prove, it’s timeless.”

My approach has always been if it’s real and could really happen then it’s scary. The more you believe it, the more frightening it is. This philosophy derives from my memories of the old 70s horror movies that scared the hell out of me as a kid, like The Omen, The Amityville horror, The legend of Hell House and Halloween to name but a few and that’s my rule book for this film keep it real, no CGI effects, no gore, no cheap shocks. Put simply the characters, the setting and the atmosphere will create the horror, the suspense and the fear.

House 49 speaks to our collective fears of isolation, loneliness and despair and with its ever present creeping dread it will chill the audience to the bone, make the hair on the back of their neck stand up, haunt their dreams and linger in their minds long after the end credits have rolled… Like I stated before I want to make “A good old fashioned ghost story”

True escapism is something audiences really respond to when done well. They are there to be entertained, thrilled and scared and The Haunting of House 49 will do that just fine, and please remember one thing… sleep with the lights on and don’t blame me for any nightmares.
