An intense claustrophobic Thriller-Noire

trapped within the confines of a single room… Room 36.

Original written as a stage play and based on a situation more than a theme, Room 36 was always going to ask the question “Can you hold a audiences attention for twenty minutes in a single room, and create something unique?” Armed with just enough money to build a set, feed the crew, a set of theatre lamps, a trusty kitchen strip light and a mini DV cam, Section2 answered their question and created... An intense claustrophobic Thriller-Noire trapped within the confines of a single room… Room 36.

Section2 produced a film that far exceeded its limitations.

Lennah Seelig / James P Weatherall.

A Filmakers Persective.

The mechanics and intention behind the script.

I love tense, claustrophobic films and Room 36 certainly offered the opportunity for that. Two women, one room and a dead body, it was a great place to start. Indeed that’s how James (the director) and I came to work together. I told him about this idea I’d had since my days at university and he loved the concept. It seems we both lean towards films where characters find themselves trapped in or by a situation.

On top of this I’d initially trained in theatre, there you hold your audiences attention in one place. I wanted to create this same situation in a film, I used one room. The camera, the audience would never be taken out of that room. If the women didn’t know what was happening outside, you wouldn’t know what was happening outside. You would stay there, trapped with them, at all times. I wanted it to be dark, dramatic, to emulate the cinematic thriller. Plus as an actor I wanted the chance to play a strong filmic role, outside of the suffering, struggling against the odds, girlfriend, wife roles that more often than not are the only thing on offer for women in short films.

However, I never imagined, couldn’t imagine the fantastic style James brought to it as a director. He made it so sleek and stylish; we even had to make up the term Thriller-noire to best communicate his unique interpretation of my script.
